Zachariah Stoughton

Zachariah Stoughton has proven himself a versatile musician, artist, educator, and administrator. He holds degrees in music from the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin as well as from Texas Christian University where he is currently a member of faculty, teaching music history, chamber music performance and piano as the assistant teacher for the piano studio of Tamás Ungár.

As a pianist, Mr. Stoughton’s performances of music from the 20th and 21st centuries have set him apart from his colleagues. His passion for the music of American composers such as Aaron Copland, Virgil Thompson, Irving Fine, Samuel Barber, Ross Lee Finney, Leonard Bernstein, Norman Dello Joio, and Roy Harris is revealed in every concert containing their works. Mr. Stoughton also has an intense interest in music of living composers, frequently performing works by Lowell Lieberman, Bright Sheng, Dan Welcher, and many others. These concerts have opened a new dimension of the piano repertoire to audiences while establishing that new music is both accessible and enjoyable.

Mr. Stoughton lectures regularly on a wide variety of topics ranging from piano pedagogy, musical temperaments, sound theory, medieval counterpoint, and early keyboard performance practice to keyboard literature, American music, music in contemporary society, and new music compositional techniques.

In 2011, Mr. Stoughton was appointed to lead operations at the PianoTexas International Academy & Festival, held every summer on the Texas Christian University campus. In addition to his administrative leadership in these programs, Mr. Stoughton maintains a busy schedule as a consultant for various music and art organizations across North Texas.
